Stop The Grannies Using Water The Data Centres Need it!

Margaret Attridge, head of water operations at Uisce Éireann, has defended their new hotline where people can report incidents of “non-essential” use of water. We should all be phoning in our local data centres or big pharma plant.

In the last two years alone data centres in Ireland have used 1.7 billion litres of water. They’re using 5 million litres of public water every single day. Environmental Protection Agency data shows that pharma companies are using even more.

Michéal Martin dismissed concerns saying the data centres are “only” using 1% of the water in Ireland. Meanwhile RTÉ News reports talk about closing nursing homes and creches because of lack of water?

Ireland loses around 36% of its clean public water supply to leaks. Because Uisce Éireann produces over 1.7 billion litres of drinking water a day, this means approximately 610 million litres of water are lost to leaks every single day.

Germany only loses 5 to 8% of its treated water to leaks, while in Britain it’s 20%. Ireland is among the worst in Europe. We lose so much because of the Thatcherite policies of government after government who have run down public services to justify a future sell off.

The only reason they didn’t make Irish Water a private company with charges in place was because we fought on the streets and made them retreat.

So while data centres and big pharma splash around in as much of our water as they need some granny in Cork is to be shopped into the state for using too much water. We’ve to cut back on our showers while they just keep on wasting.

This cuts rights to the heart of the fundamental question in Ireland - who’s in control? The corporations or the working people? As long as puppets of the rich are in the driving seat our resources are up for grabs.

We need a rebellion to put workers in the driving seat of a planned economy, a socialist economy, where all natural resources are owned by the people.
